OBU had just six turnovers in the game and 11 offensive rebounds, which led to the Bison getting 10 more shots, but the game was won at the free throw line, where OBU had more makes (17) than JBU had attempts (16). OBU's last five points of the game came at the free throw line as part of the 8-0 game-winning run.
"We shot more free throws and took care of the basketball. We did some good things. You look at the stats quickly and you wonder how we won that game," said OBU Coach
Doug Tolin. "It's a tough league and they are very good. How does that team not get votes in the national poll?"
The seventh-ranked Bison allowed one field goal, a three-pointer by Andrius Mikutis, and a free throw in the last 3:40 after JBU had rallied from seven down to take a 64-59 lead. The Golden Eagles went one-of-five from the field and turned the ball over once on their last five possessions after staging a 12-0 run to take the five-point lead.
Derik Echols got a big dunk and was fouled for a three-point play to trigger the 13-4 game-ending run.
"It was a good effort and I don't think that effort shows up in the stats. Derik really competes and made big plays for us," said Tolin.
The Bison still trailed by four with 2:18 to go, but
Tim Bowman hit a three-pointer and cut the lead to 68-67 with 2:06 to play.
John Brown committed four fouls in the last 68 seconds and the Bison converted five free throws for the game's last scoring.
OBU got 27 points and eight rebounds from
Kevin Swinton, while
Maurice Foster and Bowman added 11 each.
Sam Bartlett led John Brown with 13 points.
Now 19-4 overall and 13-2 in the SAC, the Bison are scheduled to play at Wayland Baptist Thursday at 6 p.m.
