Fifth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist withstood a second-half run by
Northwestern and claimed its school-record sixth straight Sooner
Athletic Conference road win Thursday, 76-64.
After trailing much of the first half, OBU scored the last six points before intermission, spurred by an Emmanuel Wilson three-pointer for a 34-31 halftime edge. The Bison followed that with the first nine points of the second half with four different scorers to make it a 43-31 bulge with 14:45 left in the game.
Al Moore made a steal and fed Brent Jones for a dunk to give OBU its largest lead, 56-40, with 10:01 left to play, but the Rangers had an answer.
A 14-1 Northwestern spree pulled the Rangers to within three points of the Bison, 57-54, with 6:32 left in the game.
"That's the way it is going to be here in this gym," said OBU coach Doug Tolin. "You're not going to stretch a 16-point lead to a 23-point lead and coast home."
OBU had its own reply with Justin Williams sinking four free throws, Moore converting a three-point play and Nate Brumfield adding four points for key plays in an 12-2 Bison run to build the lead back to 69-56.
Northwestern got the deficit down to nine points, but ran out of time as OBU kept up its defense down the stretch.
Brumfield, who logged nearly 30 minutes off the bench, led OBU with 25 points and 11 rebounds while Brent Jones added 18 points in his 38 minutes. Williams contributed 14 points 37 minutes.
"We played a lot of guys a lot of minutes," said Tolin. "We can rest on the way home. We may get to Interstate 35 before we start thinking about Saturday and Oklahoma Christian. All in all, there aren't many things to complain about tonight."
Two Rangers hit double figures in the rebounding column, but OBU won the overall battle of the boards 40-37 with Moore chipping in seven to go with Brumfield's 11.
Now 18-2 overall and 12-1 in the SAC, the Bison come home to face Oklahoma Christian Saturday at 8 p.m. The Bison have won 13 straight since losing at the Eagles Nest in December.
