Oklahoma Baptist lost for the first time this baseball season Saturday,
12-8, to University of the Southwest, but kept itself out of a slump
with a 5-3 win over host Hardin-Simmons.
Southwest, which lost with an eight-run OBU inning on Friday, returned the favor with eight in the fifth - all charged to Sheldon Jones (0-1).
The Bison had a 3-0 lead after an RBI single by Bam Davis turned into three run when the ball was misplayed in center field.
OBU added a run for a 4-2 lead in the second on a solo home run by Billy Thomas. The Mustangs tied the score in the third, but the Bison took a 5-4 lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Matt Welch.
A three-run triple and five RBI on two home runs gave the Mustangs the lead for good, 12-4, in the fifth.
Josh Collazo homered in the fifth and Chad Dawkins ripped a two-run homer in the sixth, but OBU could not make up the gap.
Davis led OBU with three hits, while Collazo had two.
In the second game, OBU took a 1-0 lead in the third when Vic Manzano doubled and scored on a single by Thomas.
The Cowboys answered with their three runs in the third inning, but the Bison tied things up in the fourth on a solo home run by Josh Kirkpatrick and a run-scoring error.
The Bison took a 4-3 lead in the fifth when Collazo clouted his third home run of the trip - this one to center field.
Collazo added No. 4 in the seventh - this one an opposite field job to right - for the 5-3 lead.
Collazo, Kirkpatrick, Manzano and Billy Jarka had two hits each to lead OBU's 11-hit attack in the game.
Brent Robison (2-0) picked up the win in relief while Arvin Perez pitched three shut-out innings to pick up the save.
Now 4-1 on the season, the Bison host Briar Cliff Feb. 16. OBU was originally scheduled to play Hillsdale Monday, but that game has been canceled.
