Allen Harris scored with four seconds left to give USAO an improbable 73-71 upset win over second-ranked Oklahoma Baptist Thursday in the Sooner Athletic Conference semifinals.
The Drovers, for the second time in as many seasons, upset the second-seeded team in the tournament and this time, beat a Bison team that had beaten them by 40 in Chickasha.
"I'm not sure we deserved to win that game. I thought USAO kids played well and competed well tonight," said OBU coach Doug Tolin. "Defensively we didn't get them stopped. That last possession was pretty indicative. They got a really good look. We didn't guard very well tonight."
USAO repeated postseason history, having lost by 40 to OBU in 2002 and then topping the Bison in the national championship game.
The game was close most of the way, but OBU had an eight-point lead that evaporated in four minutes.
OBU shot 35 percent from the field in the second half.
Harris led USAO with 15 points, followed by Eli Flores with 14 and Jamaal McCoy with 12.
Brent Jones led the Bison with 17, followed by Garrett Steinmetz with 13, Nate Brumfield with 11 (all at the free throw line) and Al Moore with 10.
"We had a hard time down underneath," Tolin said. "They did a good job on Nate."
Now 27-4, the Bison will get an at-large bid to the national tournament.
"We're only guaranteed one more game," Tolin said. "Hopefully we have a better effort then."
The Drovers, now 14-16 play Oklahoma Christian in the 8 p.m. semifinal Friday. The winner of that game will advance to the national tournament if Rogers State wins its semifinal game against John Brown.
