Oklahoma Baptist ripped eight home runs, including a school-record two
in the first inning by Billy Thomas, to claim a 17-5 win over
Mid-America Christian Thursday night.
OBU won the scheduled-nine-inning game in a mercy rule-shortened seven innings at Bison Field at Ford Park. The victory moved the Bison to a half game out in the playoff chase. Rogers State was idle Thursday but plays Friday the first two games of a three-game weekend set at top-ranked Lubbock Christian.
Thomas, Josh Collazo and Chad Dawkins had two home runs each in the game.
Thomas gave OBU a 1-0 lead in the first inning on his ninth home run of the season to start the eight-run first inning. Two batters later, Collazo hit his 20th. It is only the second time in Bison history a batter has hit 20 home runs in a season. Collazo hit 22 last season.
Arin Fowble singled, Victor Manzano doubled and Josh Kirkpatrick was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jonathan Carnes had an RBI fielders choice to make it 3-0. Justin Trejo then ripped a two-run double to left-center for a 5-0 OBU lead. Billy Jarka added a two-run home run and Thomas gave OBU the first of two back-to-back home runs in the game with his second solo shot to complete the eight-run frame. It was Thomas' 10th home run of the season.
Fowble singled ahead of a two-run home run by Kirkpatrick in the second for a 10-0 bulge.
Two more runs scored in the third on back-to-back home runs by Dawkins and Collazo for the 12-0 lead.
OBU moved ahead 15-0 in the fourth when Trejo homered to start the inning and Jarka singled and scored on Dawkins' second home run - his 10th of the year.
The Bison tacked on two more in the sixth on an RBI double by Thomas and an RBI single by Collazo.
OBU had 20 hits in the game with each starter getting at least one. Thomas, Dawkins, Collazo and Trejo had three apiece and Kirkpatrick and Jarka had two each.
Tyler Duran went the distance to improve to 8-4 on the season, collecting six strikeouts.
Now 32-17 overall and 11-14 in the SAC, the Bison play two games at Mid-America Christian Saturday at 1 p.m.
