Oklahoma Baptist University's 4x100 relay teams advanced with heat
victories and its decathletes and heptathlete reached the halfway mark
in the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships' opening day Thursday.
Brianna Shippy put the Lady Bison on the scoreboard with eight points, finishing second in the pole vault. She cleared 12-5.5.
The women's 4x100 relay team of Marissa Moseley, Shondia Drew, Nicole Cummings and Verone Chambers won their heat and had the third-best preliminary time at 46.75 seconds.
Jared Jackson, Omari Blair, Wit Williams and Ethan Mignard won their heat in the 4x100 men's race and move on with the fourth-best time in the prelims at 41.08.
Jonathan Hilton was 56 points off of his championship pace over the first three events - the 100 meters, long jump and shot put. Through five events, Hilton is in third at 3615 points and teammate Jared Huckabee is eighth with 3375 points.
Hilton won the high jump at 6-7.5, was eighth in the 100 meters at 11.60 seconds, seventh in the long jump at 21-1.25, eighth in the shot put at 37-11.5; and third in the 400 meters at 50.35.
Hilton was second in the long jump last season.
Huckabee was sixth in the 100 meters at 11.55 seconds, eighth in the long jump at 21-5, 13th in the shot put at 33-4.5, fourth in the high jump at 6-2.75; and seventh in the 400 meters with a 51.52.
Abby Lewis is in ninth place midway through the heptathlon with 2612 points. She was 10th in the 100 hurdles at 15.85; second in the high jump at 5-3.75, sixth in the shot put at 33-6 and 15th in the 200 meters at 28.71.
Moseley advanced in the 400 meters with the eighth-best preliminary time of 57.25 seconds. Sarah Patterson did not advance, finishing 22nd at 58.58.
Ethan Mignard advanced in the men's 400 meters, taking second in his heat and eighth overall in the prelims at 48.19.
Omari Blair advanced in the 100 meters at 11.09, taking the final spot in the semifinals. Jared Jackson was 19th at 11.19 and did not advance.
Andre Thomas won his heat of the 800 meters in 1:52.26, advancing with the top time in the preliminary round.
Verone Chambers and Optimum Baker both advanced in the women's 400 hurdles. Chambers had the top prelim time at 1:00.59, while Baker took the last spot in the semifinals in 16th at 1:04.57.
In the men's 400 hurdles, Bradley Jimerson advanced with the No. 13 time at 53.90. Adam Betterton missed the semifinal cut at 59.90.
Wit Williams moved forward in the men's 200 meters, finishing with a seventh-best 21.58 seconds.
Natalie Pedersen had the 11th-best time in the women's steeplechase to advance with an 11:14.98. Kayla Lee missed the cut at 11:49.90.
Brock Stoltzfus had the second-best time in the men's steeplechase and moved forward with a 9:15.56.
Both OBU 4x800 relay teams moved to the finals. The women's squad of Yesenia Avila, Baker, Andrea Melontree and Alyssa Montegut had the seventh-best time at 9:13.05.
Thomas, Nick Blackwell, Billy Christy and Justin Stroup were sixth in the men's relay with a 7:38.80.
In the first final of the meet for OBU, Olivia Boisse placed 10th in the women's hammer throw with a launch of 161 feet, one inch, while Kimberly Maley was 18th with a throw of 151-3.
John Armstrong was 14th in the men's hammer throw with a 168-8.
