Oklahoma Baptist came close but came up short in a 3-2 Sooner Athletic
Conference volleyball loss to Wayland Baptist Saturday, 23-25, 25-22,
27-25, 16-25, 15-12.
"We came out with a lot of fire, but we lost it," said OBU coach Anna Howle. "It seems like we're just lighting everyone else on fire. We play well and then the other team answers and we just don't respond sometimes."
The teams battled to a 19-19 tie in the first set before Chassie Hamilton came up with two late kills to pick up the 25-23 OBU win.
The Lady Bison trailed 22-18 in the second set, but rallied with a kill by Hamilton and a kill and an ace from Tamy Leipelt to make it 22-21, WBU scored three of the next four points to hold on for the win.
OBU trailed the third set by as many as seven points, but rallied from down 16-10 to 16-15 with the help of two kills by Leipelt. The Pioneers got out to a 23-20 lead, but a kill and a block by Tarah Derden spurred OBU to tie the match at 23-23.
Derden gave OBU a 25-24 lead with an ace, but WBU scored the next three point to steal the win.
The Lady Bison broke open a 14-13 fourth set with a 7-1 run, including three kills and an ace by Tasha White and OBU went on to the set win.
The Lady Bison led the fifth set 10-8 but got out-scored 7-2 from there and absorbed the loss.
Leipelt had 21 kills and 17 digs for OBU, while Derden added 16 kills and Hamilton 11. Sabra Clark had 58 assists. Cassie Winker had 26 digs to lead OBU, followed by Brittany Palmer with 23. Derden assisted on six of OBU's seven blocks.
Now 18-7 overall and 2-4 in the SAC, the Lady Bison play at St. Gregory's Tuesday at 7 p.m.
