Less than two weeks ago, Oklahoma Baptist's volleyball postseason was in peril but after winning for the 30th time this season on Tuesday night, the Lady Bison head back to Texas and the Sooner Athletic Conference with a full head of steam.
OBU, winners of 30 matches for the first time since 1980, completed the regular season in a tie for second place in the Sooner Athletic Conference by beating St. Gregory's in the Noble Complex, 3-0.
"We finished tied for second with Oklahoma City and that's who we will play first," said OBU Coach Anna Howle. "We played them twice, they beat us twice and we played badly twice. We're hungry to get another shot. They're definitely a good program."
OBU won the match Tuesday 25-10, 25-13, and 25-12.
The Lady Bison polished off the regular season at 30-9 overall and 9-5 in the SAC to finish tied with Oklahoma City.
The Lady Bison trailed very early in the first set but used an 8-1 rally to take a 14-6 edge. OBU closed out the set with seven unanswered points, including two kills by Tamy Leipelt, an ace by Cassie Winker and four SGU attack errors.
After falling behind 3-0 in the second set, the Lady Bison scored seven of the next eight points and 10 f the next 12 for a 10-5 edge. Skyler Strahm had two kills in a 7-0 OBU run for an 18-7 lead.
OBU got the third set going with a 6-1 lead and never looked back. The Lady Bison closed out the match on a 4-0 run, including two aces by Megan Fort.
Leipelt had 13 kills for the match with Strahm adding 12. Sabra Clark had 30 assists. Clark and Fort had two aces each.
Defensively, Cassie Winker had 24 digs, Shannon Hamilton had 12 and Clark had 11. Leipelt and Torri Orms had one block each.
The SAC Tournament begins Friday in Lubbock, Texas.
OBU bid farewell to its two seniors, Brittany Palmer and Tamy Leipelt.
