Oklahoma Baptist solved second-seeded Oklahoma City in grand style Friday, earning a place in the Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball championship game with a 3-0 victory over the Stars.

OBU advanced with the semifinal win in Lubbock, Texas, 25-21, 25-17, 25-15. The Lady Bison will play in Saturday's 2 p.m. championship game against the winner of the Lubbock Christian-Wayland Baptist semifinal. That semifinal was being played Friday afternoon.

The win also gave the 2009 Lady Bison a tie of the school record for wins with No. 31. The 1980 team established that mark. Breaking it would put OBU in its first national tournament.

"The kicker for us today was our defense," said OBU coach Anna Howle. "We had four players with double-figure digs and that's huge for us. We just played well as a team and we had a great mindset coming in."

OBU started the first set by scoring the first five points, including a kill by Chassie Hamilton and two blocks by Hamilton and Skyler Strahm.

The Stars rallied and the game was tied at 15-15 but OBU scored six of the next seven points, two coming on kills by Tamy Leipelt.

OBU fell behind 6-3 early in the second set but used an 8-1 run to restore order. Leipelt had two kills and an ace to deliver the 11-7 lead.

OCU got within two points at 19-17, but the Lady Bison closed out the match with the last six points. OBU had two kills by Suyan Leipelt and two aces and a kill from Tamy Leipelt in that run.

In the third set, OBU broke open a one-point game with an 8-1 spree with two kills each by Strahm and Suyan Leipelt and two blocks by Strahm. That run broke the backs and OBU held on for the win.

Tamy Leipelt had 15 kills with Suyan Leipelt adding 11. Sabra Clark had 37 assists.

Hamilton finished up with five blocks and Strahm added four. Cassie Winker led OBU with 17 digs, followed by Tamy Leipelt with 14, Hamilton with 13 and Suyan Leipelt with 10.

The win ended a five-match slide against Oklahoma City, dating back to 1983.

OBU limited OCU All-American Xiaoting Ma to 10 kills.

"Our goal was to contain Ma," said Howle. "You can't stop her because she's a great player. I thought we did a good job defending her."

OBU is now 31-9 heading into the championship final.
