Oklahoma Baptist moved to 14-0 on the season and took over sole
possession of first place in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a 79-75 win at Lubbock Christian Saturday.
The win, combined with a loss by Oklahoma Christian, left the Bison with the lone perfect mark in the SAC at 6-0.
The Bison spotted the Chaps the first nine points of the game but OBU later used a 10-0 run with four points each from Nate Brumfield and Jerrod Tillmon for a 21-18 lead with 8:10 to play.
The lead changed hands twice more with OBU finishing the half with a slim 34-30 lead.
"I'm glad were not coming back here," said OBU coach Doug Tolin. "Let all those other teams come out here. Lubbock Christian is a good basketball team and this is a tough place to play."
LCU was able to tie the game with 16:04 left but couldn't retake the lead. OBU went on a 6-0 run for a 50-43 edge. The Bison got out to as much as an 11-point lead but the Chaparrals worked it down to four with two minutes to go.
OBU, which struggled for much of the game at the free throw line, went 7 of 8 from the line down the stretch to get the win.
Brumfield led the Bison with 25 points to go with eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.
"That's a lot of good numbers," Tolin said. "He played another good game."
Tillmon added 14 points, Tim Bowman had 13, Garrett Steinmetz added 12 and A.J. Hawkins had 11.
Douglas Williams had 25 and Kenny Hewitt 20 for the Chaps.
Now 14-0 overall and 6-0 in the SAC, the Bison finish off the Texas trip Saturday at Wayland Baptist. Tip off is at 3 p.m.
