Third-ranked Oklahoma Baptist took its undefeated streak into
Claremore, where they've never come out a winner and came away with an
86-83 victory over Rogers State.
A.J. Hawkins had 24 points, Nate Brumfield added 20 and Kevin Swinton added 14 as OBU survived a late scare.
Hillcat Lance Sullivan missed a good look at a three-pointer as Brumfield scrambled to pressure it with a second left and Tim Bowman secured the ball and the win for the Bison.
"It may have been a good look, but it wasn't a wide open look. He had someone coming at him and it was a big someone," said OBU coach Doug Tolin. They ran a play we hadn't seen before. They screened Tim Bowman and Nate got out there.The Bison shot 57.4 percent from the floor to offset a rare rebounding deficit for the game, 29-34.
OBU also got a scare with 2:02 left when the Sooner Athletic Conference when Brumfield went down with an injury, holding his knee. Brumfield eventually left the floor with a smile and later returned.
The Bison trailed by one with 4:34 left in the half but ended the half on a 15-6 run for a 43-35 lead at intermission.
OBU led by as many as 13 points in the second half, but Rogers State worked it down to a two-possession game before Sullivan scored with 18 seconds left.
Brumfield missed two free throws to set up the late dramatics.
"Rogers State is a good team and they showed that tonight," Tolin said. "We had a real hard time guarding them in the second half. A couple of free throws would have made it easier, but it was good enough."
Now 17-0 on the season and 9-0 in the SAC, the Bison play at Mid-America Christian Thursday.
