Twentieth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist scored an historic win over No. 12
Southern Nazarene, recording their first-ever win against the Crimson
Storm, 5-4, Wednesday.
"The girls just fought and fought and finally won," said OBU coach Sue
Dick. "They had a plan, they worked it and it paid off. I'm proud of
every one of them."
OBU lost the doubles 2-1, getting a win from Paola Costa and Lilian Ferreira, 8-4. But the Lady Bison overcame that with a 4-2 advantage in singles play.
While all four wins were straight sets, there were some big battles.
Ferreira won in No. 2, topping Olga Kozheznikova, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, and Mariana Rosa knocked off Steffie Plaza in No. 4 singles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in two close and team-decisive wins.
Costa defeated Sara Byrne in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-3 and Diana Barns won easily in No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1, over Allison White.
"It was an epic win," Dick said.
The Oklahoma Baptist women meet SNU again April 8.
